How this calculator works

Selling price = cost × (1 + markup ÷ 100)

Markup is based on cost, while margin is based on selling price. A 50% markup does not equal a 50% margin.

Example: $80 cost with 50% markup

The markup adds $40, producing a $120 selling price. The equivalent profit margin is 33.33%.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 100% markup a 100% margin?

No. A 100% markup doubles the cost, which produces a 50% margin.

Can I convert margin to markup?

Yes. This calculator shows the equivalent margin automatically, and the Margin Calculator can solve a target margin price.
